💫 Painted-earth lore and care
Jasper is not one formally defined mineral species, and commercial names do not always indicate exact composition or origin. It is usually distinguished from Agate by greater opacity and less systematic translucency, while Chert is the broader geological term for many fine-grained silica-rich rocks. Dendritic markings are mineral growths, not fossilised plants.
Dense silica-rich Jasper commonly measures approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and has no continuous cleavage, although it remains brittle and may chip along old fractures, veins or breccia contacts. Clean sound pieces with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth or brush, then dry thoroughly. Avoid harsh abrasives, strong chemicals, sudden heat, steam and ultrasonic cleaning when fractures, dye, resin, coatings or repairs may be present.
