Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral found in an extraordinary range of colours and crystal forms. It may appear clear, white, honey, orange, yellow, blue, green, pink, red, grey or nearly black, shaped into rhombohedra, pointed crystals, layered masses, fibres and cave formations. It is a major component of limestone and marble and one of the defining minerals of caves, shells and sedimentary landscapes.
