Porphyry — crystal constellations, volcanic time and an aura of purposeful growth

Porphyry is an igneous rock recognised by conspicuous larger crystals, called phenocrysts, set within a much finer groundmass. It is a textural family rather than one fixed composition, so Porphyry may contain Feldspar, Quartz, Amphibole, Pyroxene or Olivine and range from pale felsic rock to dark mafic varieties.

✨ What makes Porphyry special?

  • It preserves contrasting stages of crystallisation: larger crystals began growing before the surrounding melt became a much finer matrix.
  • The name describes texture, not one recipe: Granite, Andesite, Rhyolite and Basalt can all develop porphyritic forms.
  • Its crystals resemble a stone constellation: pale or dark phenocrysts may appear scattered like stars across red, purple, grey, green or brown groundmass.
