Carnelian — ember glow, creative courage and magic set in motion

Carnelian is the translucent orange-to-red variety of chalcedony, a finely intergrown form of quartz. Iron oxides dispersed through the silica create shades ranging from pale honey and tangerine to sunset orange, rust red and deep reddish brown. Rather than sparkling, Carnelian gathers and diffuses light, producing the warm inner glow for which it has been treasured across ancient jewellery, beads, carvings and seal stones.

💫 Ember lore and care

Carnelian and Sard gradually blend into one another: Carnelian is generally lighter, brighter and more orange-red, while Sard tends to be darker, browner and less translucent. When distinct bands are visible, the material may be described more precisely as Carnelian Agate.

Carnelian measures approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and has no cleavage, though sharp impacts can still chip it. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and prolonged high heat, particularly when treatment or dyeing is uncertain.
