Larimar — Caribbean blue, fibrous light and an aura of calm clarity

Larimar is the blue gem variety and trade name of massive pectolite from the Dominican Republic. Its sky-blue, turquoise, green-blue and white patterns form as fine mineral fibres grow through cavities and veins in altered volcanic rock. Trace copper is commonly associated with its distinctive colour, while calcite, hematite and dark host-rock minerals may add clouds, plumes and contrasting edges.

✨ What makes Larimar special?

  • Ocean-like patterns formed in volcanic rock: radiating and interlocking pectolite fibres create pale webs, blue pools, rolling waves and cloud-like boundaries.
  • Every cut changes the current: slicing across different fibre directions may reveal broad blue fields, feathered lines, star-like centres or softly reflective movement.
  • A gemstone tied closely to place: recognised Larimar is associated with the Sierra de Baoruco and Barahona region of the Dominican Republic, where blue pectolite occurs in altered basalt.

💫 Caribbean-water lore and care

Larimar is not Turquoise, Chrysocolla or blue Jasper; it is a locality-linked variety and trade name of pectolite. Its name was created in the 1970s by combining “Lari,” from Larissa, with the Spanish word mar, meaning sea. Similar-looking blue materials should not be labelled Larimar without credible Dominican provenance.

Larimar measures approximately 4.5–5 on the Mohs scale and can scratch, abrade or fracture more easily than Quartz-family gemstones. Clean it briefly with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Avoid acids, harsh chemicals, abrasives, strong heat, steam and ultrasonic cleaning, and store it separately from harder jewellery to protect polished surfaces and vulnerable edges.
