💫 Ink-line lore and care
Natural Howlite is ordinarily white, colourless or grey-white. Strong turquoise-blue or green material is usually dyed and should be described as dyed Howlite rather than natural Turquoise. The two minerals are chemically unrelated: Howlite is a calcium borate, while Turquoise is a hydrated copper-aluminium phosphate.
Massive Howlite measures approximately 3.5 on the Mohs scale and can scratch, abrade or stain relatively easily. Dust it with a soft cloth or brush and use only a barely damp cloth or a brief wash with lukewarm water and mild soap, followed by prompt drying. Avoid prolonged soaking, cosmetics, solvents, strong heat, steam and ultrasonic cleaning, especially for dyed, waxed, resin-treated or assembled pieces.
