Lapis Lazuli in Blue and Shadow
Raw lapis lazuli draws the eye through medium and deep blue, interrupted by pale grey and white patches, streaks and bands. Across its broad, uneven faces, grainy areas meet ridges and visible cracks, giving the blue a rugged texture.
The blue mineral lazurite in lapis lazuli was ground to make ultramarine pigment. It is a lovely connection for a stone whose colour feels so expressive: blue held within rough contours, with pale bands breaking its rhythm.
These contrasts suggest a twilight scene, with pale lanterns drifting through blue dusk. Yet the angular outlines bring the eye back to something more rugged—a landscape of grainy faces, ridges and jagged edges.
