Chalcopyrite — golden metal, peacock fire and possibility beneath the surface

Chalcopyrite is a copper–iron sulfide mineral with the formula CuFeS₂ and one of the world’s most important natural copper ores. Fresh surfaces display a rich brass-yellow metallic lustre, while exposure and deliberate surface treatment may produce violet, blue, green, bronze and rose-coloured tarnish. It occurs as compact masses, disseminated grains and occasional tetragonal crystals, often beside quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, galena and other hydrothermal minerals.

💫 Peacock lore and care

Chalcopyrite is sometimes confused with Pyrite, but it is softer and usually more intensely yellow. “Peacock Ore” may describe tarnished or treated Chalcopyrite as well as Bornite, so the colourful trade name alone does not establish the mineral identity.

Chalcopyrite measures approximately 3.5–4 on the Mohs scale and is brittle. Keep it dry and clean it gently with a soft brush or cloth. Avoid acids, salt, soaking, steam, ultrasonic cleaning and polishing compounds, which may change or remove its delicate tarnish. Do not grind or ingest the material.
