Bornite — peacock colours, copper-rich depth and the magic of transformation

Bornite is an opaque copper–iron sulfide mineral with the idealised formula Cu₅FeS₄. Fresh surfaces are usually bronze, copper-red or brown, but exposure to air gradually creates an iridescent tarnish of violet, blue, green and gold. This changing surface earned Bornite its familiar name “Peacock Ore”, although the same trade name is sometimes applied to colourful Chalcopyrite.

💫 Peacock lore and care

Not every brightly coloured specimen sold as Peacock Ore is Bornite. Chalcopyrite is frequently given an intensified rainbow surface through treatment, so an accurate seller should identify the mineral rather than relying only on the colourful trade name.

Bornite is soft and brittle, measuring about 3 on the Mohs scale. Keep it dry and clean it gently with a soft brush or cloth. Avoid acids, polishing compounds, soaking, steam and ultrasonic cleaning, as these may damage or remove its delicate tarnish. Do not grind or ingest the material.

Keep Bornite nearby when transformation feels unfamiliar. Let its changing colours remind you that becoming different does not always mean losing yourself—sometimes it is how hidden brilliance finally reaches the surface.
