Diopside — forest colour, mantle-born stories and an aura of living direction

Diopside is a calcium-magnesium clinopyroxene with the formula CaMgSi₂O₆. It ranges from colourless and pale pistachio to olive, bottle green, nearly black and violet. Chromium creates the vivid colour of Chrome Diopside, iron deepens greener and browner tones, while manganese may produce lavender Violane. It forms in metamorphic marble, calc-silicate skarns and ultramafic rocks originating far below Earth’s surface.

Black Star Diopside displays a natural four-ray star produced by oriented reflective inclusions beneath a correctly aligned cabochon. Violane is manganese-influenced violet Diopside, while Tashmarine is a trade name for bright yellow-green material rather than a separate mineral species.

Diopside measures approximately 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale and has two good cleavage directions meeting near right angles. Protect it from sharp impacts, pressure and harder gemstones. Clean briefly with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry promptly. Avoid steam and ultrasonic cleaning, particularly for included, fractured or treated pieces.
