Chrysocolla — copper lagoons, truth in motion and magic shaped by water

Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper-silicate material known for vivid cyan, turquoise, teal and sea-green colour. It forms near the surface of weathered copper deposits, where copper-bearing waters meet silica and create botryoidal crusts, vein fillings and richly patterned masses. It is often intergrown with Quartz, Chalcedony, Malachite, Azurite, Cuprite and other secondary copper minerals.

💫 Copper-water lore and care

The name Chrysocolla comes from Greek words meaning “gold” and “glue”, recalling copper-bearing substances once used by metalworkers. Translucent blue-green Chalcedony coloured by copper is widely known as Gem Silica and is much harder than ordinary porous Chrysocolla.

Hardness varies from roughly 2–4 in soft, porous material to about 6.5–7 in silica-rich pieces. Keep specimens dry, separate them from harder stones and clean only with a soft cloth or brush. Avoid soaking, acids, salt, steam and ultrasonic cleaning. As a copper-bearing material, it should not be ingested or used to prepare crystal water.
