💫 Garden lore and care
Emerald and green Beryl belong to the same mineral species, but the names are not always interchangeable. Emerald is associated with sufficiently distinct chromium- and/or vanadium-related green, whereas paler iron-dominant material is generally described as green Beryl. Laboratory-grown Emerald has essentially the same crystal identity but a human-made origin.
Emerald measures approximately 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, yet fissures and imperfect cleavage can make it vulnerable to impact. Many stones are clarity-enhanced with oil or resin. Clean gently with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry promptly. Avoid heat, solvents, steam and ultrasonic cleaning.
