K2 — pale granite, blue azurite orbs and an aura of ambitious perspective

K2, also sold as K2 Granite, K2 Jasper or Raindrop Azurite, is a pale granitoid rock marked by vivid blue copper-mineral concentrations. Its light matrix commonly contains Quartz, albite, microcline and mica, while Azurite occupies tiny fractures and pores that gather into striking circular or cloud-like blue areas; occasional green markings may be related to Malachite.

✨ What makes K2 special?

  • Electric blue against quiet granite: bright Azurite creates an unusual contrast with white, cream and grey mineral grains.
  • The spots continue beneath the surface: cut specimens show that the blue areas penetrate the rock rather than existing only as superficial paint-like marks.
  • Two geological stages meet: the granitoid host formed first, while copper-bearing material later entered stress-created fractures and pores.

💫 Mountain-sky lore and care

K2 is a modern trade name rather than a formal mineral species, and it is not true Jasper. Documented material is associated with the Khaplu area of Gilgit-Baltistan in northern Pakistan; despite its name, reliable locality records place the occurrence away from K2 Peak itself. Provenance should therefore come from supplier documentation rather than the name alone.

The Quartz-and-feldspar host is relatively hard, but Azurite is much softer and sensitive to acids, heat and harsh cleaning. Wipe pieces gently with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth and dry them promptly. Avoid vinegar, acidic cleaners, bleach, prolonged soaking, abrasives, steam and ultrasonic cleaning, particularly around blue areas, fractures, drill holes or repaired sections.
