Chiastolite — a cross grown in stone, guarded paths and crossroads magic

Chiastolite is a distinctive variety of Andalusite, an aluminium silicate mineral with the formula Al₂SiO₅. Its famous dark cross is not carved or painted: graphite, carbonaceous matter, clay and other fine inclusions became organised into four sectors while the crystal grew inside metamorphic rock. Cut across the prism, those hidden sectors emerge as a natural cross surrounded by earthy brown, ochre, olive and reddish tones.

💫 Cross-stone lore and care

The name comes from the Greek word chiastos, meaning crossed or arranged crosswise. A lengthwise cut reveals dark parallel rails instead of the familiar cross, showing that the pattern is a three-dimensional structure running through the crystal.

Chiastolite is approximately 6.5–7.5 on the Mohs scale, yet included areas, cleavage and thin slices can still chip. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Avoid sharp impacts, steam and ultrasonic cleaning, particularly for fractured, backed, resin-treated or heavily included pieces.
