Hypersthene — bronze reflection, deep-crustal calm and an aura of measured confidence

Hypersthene is a historic name for dark, iron-bearing material within the orthopyroxene series between magnesium-rich Enstatite and iron-rich Ferrosilite. Its charcoal, slate, olive-brown and nearly black surfaces may reveal broad bronze, silver or copper-coloured schiller when aligned microscopic layers return light from beneath a polished face.

✨ What makes Hypersthene special?

  • Light hidden within darkness: a stone that appears almost still under flat illumination may reveal a sweeping metallic-looking glow when slowly turned.
  • Cooling history made visible: fine exsolution layers, oxide platelets and aligned inclusions may preserve how the crystal reorganised as its host rock cooled.
  • A mineral of deep environments: orthopyroxene occurs in norite, gabbro, pyroxenite, mantle-derived rocks, charnockite and high-temperature granulite.

Hypersthene is generally treated today as a historic, varietal or appearance-based name rather than a separate modern mineral species. “Bronzite” overlaps with it in commercial use, while exact placement between Enstatite and Ferrosilite normally requires analytical testing. Large carvings may also contain several orthopyroxene grains or associated minerals rather than one uniform crystal.

Hypersthene-bearing material measures approximately 5–6 on the Mohs scale and has two good cleavage directions meeting close to a right angle. Clean briefly with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth or brush, then dry completely. Protect polished surfaces from grit, harder gemstones and sharp impacts, and avoid prolonged soaking, solvents, steam and ultrasonic cleaning.
