Chalcedony — misty light, hidden fibres and harmony woven from many forms

Chalcedony is a dense microcrystalline silica material composed mainly of extremely fine quartz fibres with varying amounts of moganite. Its crystals are too small to see individually, producing a smooth surface, softly diffused glow and colours ranging from white, grey and misty blue to lavender, pink, green, orange, red, brown and black. In broader use, the Chalcedony family includes Agate, Onyx, Carnelian, Sard, Chrysoprase, Bloodstone and many forms of Jasper.

Chalcedony has long been carved into beads, seals, signet stones, cameos and small vessels. Its lack of cleavage, fine texture and ability to preserve detailed engraving made it especially valuable to ancient craftspeople.

Chalcedony measures approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and has no cleavage, although thin edges can still chip. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, high heat and prolonged sunlight when dyeing, resin, coatings or other treatments may be present.
