Feldspar — Earth-building crystals, hidden light and an aura of quiet creation

Feldspar is not one mineral but a vast family of framework silicates that forms much of Earth’s crust. Its two principal branches are alkali feldspar, shaped mainly by potassium and sodium, and plagioclase, extending from sodium-rich Albite to calcium-rich Anorthite. Within this family appear pink Orthoclase, green Amazonite, luminous Moonstone, iridescent Labradorite and sparkling Sunstone.

✨ What makes Feldspar special?

  • A foundation of landscapes: Feldspars are major ingredients of granite, basalt, gneiss, pegmatite and many other rocks forming continents, mountains and planetary crusts.
  • Hidden structures create light: microscopic intergrowths and aligned inclusions produce Moonstone’s glow, Labradorite’s colour flash and Sunstone’s metallic sparkle.
  • Crystals that record change: zoning, twinning and internal lamellae may preserve evidence of cooling, changing magma chemistry, metamorphism and later alteration.

💫 Earth-building lore and care

Moonstone, Labradorite, Sunstone and Amazonite are gem or trade varieties within the Feldspar family, not separate members of one identical species. Moonstone is commonly an adularescent alkali-feldspar intergrowth, Labradorite belongs to plagioclase, and Amazonite is generally blue-green Microcline.

Feldspar measures approximately 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale, yet two strong cleavage directions make it more vulnerable to impact than its hardness suggests. Clean with lukewarm water, mild neutral soap and a soft cloth or brush. Avoid steam, sudden heat and ultrasonic cleaning, especially for fractured, filled, backed or highly included pieces.
