A Little River of Lapis Blue

Deep blue sets the mood of this lapis lazuli bracelet, but each round bead offers lighter and darker mottling to explore. Smooth, glossy-looking surfaces catch bright points of light against the rich blue. There is a lovely connection to artists’ colour, too: the blue mineral lazurite in lapis lazuli was ground to make ultramarine pigment.

Small silver-coloured rings interrupt the oval of beads, while a gold-coloured, square-faced bead introduces a different shape. Its dark geometric pattern gives the rounded outline a crisp little counterpoint. In the imagination, these blues might become a miniature river, with pools of colour passing between bright stepping stones—as though the whole blue current had gathered around that one patterned square.
