Lapis Lazuli: A Cove in Blue
Lapis lazuli draws the eye with vivid blue, crossed by irregular streaks and patches of white and pale grey. Smooth, glossy surfaces catch bright white highlights, while the rounded oval and oblong shapes give these stones a soft, pebble-like character.
The blue lazurite in lapis lazuli was ground to make ultramarine pigment. Knowing that gives the colour another dimension: a blue enjoyed within a stone could also become an artist’s pigment, carrying its vivid presence into a different form.
The pale markings invite a little daydream of a blue cove, with ribbons of foam wandering across the water. No straight shoreline here—just rounded edges, glossy light, and each white streak finding its own path through the blue.
