Jade — interlocking strength, living colour and an aura of enduring continuity

Jade is the historic name shared by two different gem materials: Jadeite, a tightly interlocking pyroxene aggregate, and Nephrite, a felted network of Tremolite-Actinolite fibres. Their chemistry and appearance differ, yet both are celebrated for exceptional toughness and occur in green, white, cream, lavender, yellow, red-brown, grey and black forms.

✨ What makes Jade special?

  • Two materials beneath one name: Jadeite forms a fine granular mosaic, while Nephrite gains strength from densely interwoven mineral fibres.
  • Toughness built through connection: its internal architecture redirects and divides fractures, allowing thin bangles, blades, vessels and intricate carvings to endure.
  • Far more than green: Jadeite may appear vivid emerald, lavender or translucent white, while Nephrite often shows creamy, celadon, spinach-green and dark earthy tones.

💫 Carved-stone lore and care

“Jade” should not be used automatically for every green carving. Serpentine, Quartz, Aventurine, Calcite and manufactured materials are sometimes sold under jade-like names. For Jadeite, Type A describes untreated material apart from an accepted surface wax; Type B is bleached and polymer-impregnated, Type C is dyed, and Type B+C has received both forms of treatment.

Jadeite measures approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale and Nephrite approximately 6–6.5, but toughness does not make either indestructible. Clean sound pieces briefly with lukewarm water, mild soap and a very soft cloth or brush, then dry thoroughly. Avoid sharp impacts, acids, solvents, steam, ultrasonic cleaning and prolonged soaking, especially for dyed, polymer-treated, backed, repaired or historic pieces.
