Banding and Color
The “pinstripe test” is simple: do the bands read as clean, parallel, intentional layers from normal viewing distance?
The ideal sardonyx face shows orderly contrast. A bright white or cream layer sits against a warm sard ground, ranging from café au lait and honeyed tan to chestnut and ruddy red-brown. Slight natural variation gives character, but heavy waviness, blurred transitions, or gray-brown muddiness reduce clarity.
- For cameos: the white cap should be thick and even enough to carry noses, curls, lettering, scrolls, or relief edges without exposing the sard base by accident.

Reports and Authentication
Gemological reports can confirm chalcedony-family material, identify some simulants, note dye or treatment evidence, and describe assembled cameos. They generally do not assign a formal sardonyx grade, and geographic origin is rarely determined for chalcedony.

Broad designer strata

Warm basalt-related palettes

Local agate fields can produce onyx-style banding in nodules and veins. Such pieces are often best understood as locality-interest chalcedony with sardonyx-like architecture when the white and sard layers are clear.
