Tektites are natural glasses formed when a hypervelocity meteorite impact melts terrestrial surface material and ejects it through the atmosphere. The molten droplets cool rapidly before falling across extensive strewn fields, producing black, brown, smoky or green glass with flowing forms and naturally etched surfaces.
