Fluorite — geometric colour, luminous layers and an aura of ordered possibility

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral with the formula CaF₂, celebrated for cubic and octahedral crystals in purple, green, blue, yellow, pink, colourless and multicoloured forms. Its colour may arise from trace elements, structural defects and natural radiation, while changing growth conditions can create bands, phantoms and sharply divided zones within a single crystal.

Fluorite is also known industrially as Fluorspar. Its name is connected to the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow”, reflecting its historic use as a flux that helps materials melt and impurities separate during metalworking. Not every Fluorite specimen fluoresces, and the glow’s colour and strength depend on its chemistry and structure.

Fluorite measures 4 on the Mohs scale and has perfect cleavage in four directions, so it scratches and chips more easily than its solid appearance suggests. Clean it briefly with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft cloth, then dry promptly. Avoid acids, salt, steam, ultrasonic cleaning, sudden temperature changes and prolonged intense sunlight, which may affect some colours.
