Obsidian — volcanic glass, hidden colour and an aura of honest reflection

Obsidian is dense natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich molten rock solidifies with little crystal growth. Although commonly black, thin edges may reveal smoky brown, olive or amber translucency, while internal bubbles, flow layers and later crystallisation create golden sheen, rainbow colour, mahogany bands and snowflake patterns.

✨ What makes Obsidian special?

  • It is glass rather than a crystal: Obsidian lacks the repeating atomic lattice required for a mineral species and is therefore described as a mineraloid.
  • Its fracture creates extraordinary edges: curved conchoidal breakage can produce thin, precise blades, flakes and points.
  • Its varieties record different processes: snowflakes mark crystallisation, sheen reflects aligned bubbles and rainbow colours arise from extremely fine internal layers.

🪞 Night mirrors and volcanic fingerprints

Obsidian was shaped into blades, ornaments and polished mirrors by many societies. In parts of Mesoamerica, dark reflective surfaces acquired powerful meanings connected with vision, authority and the unseen.

Its trace elements can also identify a particular volcanic source, allowing archaeologists to reconstruct ancient trade routes from scattered artefacts.
