Iceland Spar — doubled vision, polarised light and an aura of precise perspective

Iceland Spar is exceptionally transparent optical-quality Calcite, composed of calcium carbonate, CaCO₃. Its powerful birefringence divides most entering light into two polarised rays travelling along different paths, so a line, letter or object viewed through a clear rhomb appears as two distinct images.

✨ What makes Iceland Spar special?

  • One object becomes two: its ordinary and extraordinary rays emerge at different positions, producing a visible double image without specialised equipment.
  • Hidden polarisation revealed: the two images are polarised in different directions, allowing a rotating polarising filter to darken one and then the other.

💫 Double-vision lore and care

Iceland Spar is not a separate mineral species but a historic name for unusually clear Calcite, especially material associated with Helgustaðir in East Iceland. Familiar slanted blocks are often cleavage rhombohedra split from larger crystals rather than complete natural crystals with original growth faces. Calcite is also a plausible candidate for the debated Norse “sunstone”, although its historical navigational use remains unproven.

Iceland Spar measures only 3 on the Mohs scale and has perfect cleavage in three directions. Remove loose dust with a soft artist’s brush before wiping, and use only a barely damp cloth when necessary, followed by immediate drying. Avoid acids, vinegar, citrus, soaking, pressure, impacts, steam and ultrasonic cleaning, all of which can scratch, etch or split the crystal.

Keep Iceland Spar nearby when one explanation seems too simple for everything being observed. Let its doubled image remind you that clarity does not always reduce reality to a single view—sometimes it reveals the structure connecting several perspectives.
