Hessonite — cinnamon warmth, treacle light and an aura of cultivated confidence

Hessonite, traditionally called Cinnamon Stone, is the honey-orange to reddish-brown gem variety of Grossular Garnet. Its warm colour is commonly associated with small amounts of iron, while many transparent stones contain a softly roiled internal texture resembling stirred honey, melted sugar or heat moving through amber.

  • A Garnet in autumn colours: Hessonite ranges from golden honey and apricot to cinnamon, cognac, reddish orange and deep tea-brown.

💫 Cinnamon lore and care

Hessonite is not a separate mineral species but a warm-coloured variety of Grossular Garnet. It may resemble orange Spessartine, Citrine, Topaz or Zircon, but Hessonite is typically distinguished by its Grossular properties, singly refractive behaviour and characteristic treacle-like interior. The historic names “hyacinth” and “jacinth” are ambiguous and have also been used for Zircon and other reddish-orange gems.

Hessonite measures approximately 6.5–7.5 on the Mohs scale and has no cleavage, although it remains brittle and may chip under a sharp blow. Clean it with lukewarm water, mild soap and a soft brush, then dry thoroughly. Avoid steam, sudden heat, abrasive cleaners and ultrasonic cleaning when fractures, fillings, inclusions or delicate settings are present.
