Coral — ocean architecture, ancient memory and magic built together

Coral is not a single mineral but a family of biogenic and fossil gem materials created from the skeletal structures of marine colonies. Precious red and pink coral is largely calcitic, blue coral is primarily aragonitic, and black coral contains a protein-rich organic axis. Ancient coral may later fossilise or become replaced by silica while preserving its branching chambers and flower-like corallite patterns.

💫 Reef lore and care

Recent Coral and fossil Coral should not be treated as the same material. Modern Coral is commonly soft and sensitive, while silica-replaced fossil Coral may approach Quartz in hardness. Dyeing, bleaching, resin impregnation, coating and reconstruction are also encountered, so documented identity and responsible provenance matter.

Most recent Coral measures approximately 3–4 on the Mohs scale. Keep it away from perfume, cosmetics, chlorine, acids, heat and prolonged sunlight. Wipe gently or rinse briefly in mild soapy water without soaking; never use steam or ultrasonic cleaning. Fossil Coral is usually tougher, but natural fractures, soft matrix and possible treatments still require cautious care.
