Howlite: Little Rivers in White
White and off-white give this howlite a softly luminous character, crossed by irregular grey lines that branch and gather into darker patches. Rounded outlines range from oval to gently triangular, while the smooth-looking surfaces carry a slight sheen. Light catches the curves, making the pale shapes stand out.
Howlite takes its name from Henry How, the chemist and mineralogist who first described the mineral. That connection to a curious observer feels fitting for markings that reward a closer look.
In an imagined landscape, those grey branches become narrow rivers threading between pale terraces. Follow a line until it forks, then let a darker patch become a bend or a sheltered pool—a whole small landscape held within a rounded outline.
