Fluorite: A Cove of Clouded Colour
Pale green meets dark blue-green and purple in these fluorite stones, with cloudy whitish areas softening the colours. Smooth, glossy surfaces catch bright white reflections, while the irregularly rounded outlines range from oval to softly triangular and rounded rectangular. Each piece has its own silhouette and mottled pattern.
Fluorite also has a place in the language of light: in 1852, the word fluorescence was coined from fluorspar, another name for fluorite. It is a small discovery that gives this familiar mineral an unexpected connection to a word.
The colours suggest a sheltered cove at dusk, with green water, purple shadows and scattered points of light. In that imagined world, the cloudy markings become wisps of mist, blurring the boundary between the blue-green depths and purple shallows.
