A violet cove of tiny lights

Pale lavender deepens into purple inside this Amethyst cathedral, where densely gathered angular points catch tiny, bright reflections. White and blue-grey bands follow the irregular arch of the opening, with a dark charcoal-coloured edge beyond them. The contrast draws the eye from the rough outer surface into the sparkling recess.

Amethyst takes its name from the Greek amethystos, reflecting an old belief about sobriety. That meaning is a small thread of human history woven into the crystal’s name.

The upright shape widens towards its nearly flat lower edge and narrows to a rounded, uneven top. Seen as an imagined constellation cove, its glinting interior becomes a sheltered sky. Smoother bands surround the crowded points, and the grainy dark rim forms a shoreline around the violet light.
