Opal — captured rainbows, ancient water and an aura of unfolding possibility

Opal is a hydrated silica mineraloid, commonly written as SiO2·nH2O. Unlike crystalline Quartz, it is amorphous to poorly ordered. Precious Opal displays moving spectral colour, while common Opal may instead be treasured for its body colour, translucence, inclusions, patterns or fossil forms.

✨ What makes Opal special?

  • Its rainbow is built from structure: orderly microscopic silica spheres diffract light into flashes of red, orange, green, blue and violet.
  • Every movement creates another display: changing the viewing angle allows different regions and wavelengths of colour to appear.
  • One family contains many worlds: black, white, crystal, fire, boulder, matrix, water and fossil Opals can look dramatically different while sharing a silica-rich identity.

⚡ Captured lightning and the queen of gems

Romans admired Opal because it appeared to contain the colours of many other gemstones. Bedouin folklore imagined that Opals held lightning and fell from the sky during storms.

Its name is often traced through Sanskrit upala, meaning “precious stone”, into the Latin opalus.
