Liun, an apprentice with quiet hands, swept the courtyard of the Sun-Forge. He loved the sound of sand sliding into the furnace bins: a soft, crowded hush, as though the grains were remembering beaches they had never fully left. On market days he listened to traders describe agate bands, rock crystal spheres, obsidian mirrors, and the silver-gray material from the foundry that broke like flint and shone like a disciplined star.

The older glassworkers called that gray material sand’s serious answer. Liun called it desert logic, though only when no master could hear him being poetic on paid time.

Chapter II

A City Without Moonlight

Late in one summer, the moon failed to rise for seven nights. The astronomer blamed smoke from distant hills. The fishers blamed weather. The children blamed shyness. Master Arrio, the glasshouse foreman, blamed insufficient scheduling, which was his preferred explanation for most events.

By the eighth night the lamps of Valley Spark burned low. Oil had become dear, the stars were thin, and the streets had lost their friendly edges. Liun sat on the glasshouse steps with a polished offcut of silicon in his palm. It caught the last torchlight and returned it as a narrow gray flash.

“If a stone can learn to mirror,” he said to the dark, “perhaps a mirror can learn to be a little moon.”

The furnace door opened behind him. Tessera, the oldest worker in the Sun-Forge, stepped into the courtyard. She was called Tessera because she loved mosaics and because she distrusted any truth too large to be made of smaller truths. She placed a shallow tray of clean sand beside Liun.

“A moon is not a possession,” she said. “It is a habit of light. Habits can be taught, but only if the teacher listens first.”

The sand seemed silent. Then it shivered under the feet of the sleeping city, the settling beams, and the slow breathing of the furnace dampers. The surface rose into dunes and fell into angles. Liun bent close. Tessera did not explain too quickly. Some lessons fail when rushed.

Tessera turned the disc in her hands. “Glass is a wide river,” she said. “We need a river that carries rules.”

They walked to the foundry by the dry canal, where a worker named Moro kept bars and fragments of refined silicon wrapped in paper. He warned them that the material was brittle, exacting, and unforgiving of careless hands. Tessera accepted the warning as a form of respect. Liun carried a fist-sized fragment back to the Sun-Forge as if it were both an ingredient and a question.

Chapter IV

The Disc That Learned a Path

They did not make a perfect crystal. They did not own the instruments for that, nor did the story require it. What they made was an image of order: a thin, dark, mirror-gray disc that held the memory of silica, the discipline of silicon, and a small notch on its rim to mark beginning.

When Liun held the disc to the lamp, the flame returned in scattered echoes across the surface. It did not glow like fire. It organized light. It made a modest, steady brightness that seemed to prefer useful work over spectacle.

Tessera placed the disc on black cloth in the courtyard. The glasshouse workers stood around it, not as worshippers but as craftspeople who knew the solemnity of a new tool. Together they spoke the lattice chant. The disc caught the lamplight, softened it, and sent it outward in a pale circumference. Chapter V

Liun and Tessera traveled there with the Wafer Moon wrapped in wool and carried in a wooden case. When they arrived, Glasswing’s square was silent. Even the canal water seemed to move reluctantly.

By midnight, Glasswing had not become bright. It had become navigable, which in a hard season is sometimes the more important miracle.

Chapter VI

The Borrowed Nights

The Wafer Moon traveled after that. It visited towns without oil, river houses flooded beyond their lamps, observatories under clouded skies, and schools whose winter mornings began too early for the courage of children. Wherever it went, Tessera refused to let the disc become an idol.

“Do not ask it to save you,” she would say. “Ask it to show you where your hands can begin.”

In each place, the same things proved necessary: a clear surface, a little order, shared attention, and work that continued after wonder had done its part. The Wafer Moon became less a marvel than a custom. People set it out, sang softly, cleaned windows, repaired hinges, wrote plans, distributed oil, and made soup for neighbors who had forgotten to eat.

Years later, when Tessera was old enough to have become almost entirely herself, she gave Liun a smaller disc with a fine notch at its rim.

“You have carried the city’s moon,” she said. “Now carry a reminder. Light is a visitor. We make it welcome by being prepared.”

Liun became a mender of lamps, mirrors, and dark rooms. He carried the small disc with him and called his trade moon-minding. Payment, by his rule, could be made in coin, bread, local histories, or any soup recipe with a reliable ending.

The Return to Valley Spark

When Tessera died, Valley Spark brought the Wafer Moon down from the tower and placed it in the glasshouse courtyard where it had first learned its work. No one spoke loudly. A tool that had served the city deserved the dignity of ordinary care: a clean cloth, a steady hand, and a story told without exaggeration.

Liun spoke last. He told the children that the Wafer Moon was not magic in the way lazy tales promise magic. It did not summon the moon, command the dark, or make human labor unnecessary. It taught a city to treat light as something to be gathered, protected, shared, and directed.

He wrote the final line of the public record himself:
