Fine pale seams sometimes cross these colours like roads, coastlines or distant horizons.

Polychrome Jasper is predominantly built from microcrystalline quartz and may also contain small amounts of moganite. Its colouring comes from mineral pigments distributed through the stone rather than from paint or a surface coating.
Red, orange and brown areas commonly reflect iron oxides. Yellow and ochre tones may involve hydrated iron compounds, while green, blue-grey and plum areas can reflect combinations of clays, altered volcanic material and minor mineral inclusions.
This mixture gives the stone its characteristic softness of colour. Even vivid pieces often appear earthy rather than artificial, as though their palette has been borrowed from canyon walls, dry riverbeds and the sky immediately before rain.
