The "classic" bloodstone is opaque green jasper with red inclusions of hematite. The red inclusions are supposed to resemble spots of blood, hence the name bloodstone. Because the colouration of bloodstone is caused by the inclusion of another mineral within the matrix of the stone as a whole, no two pieces of bloodstone are the same. There are two forms of bloodstone; the plasma and the heliotrope. Heliotrope is transparent and displays red within the stone. Plasma is a deep green and opaque with little or no red in it. Medieval Christian lore said that this stone was formed at the site of the Crucifixion, when Christ’s blood fell on a piece of green jasper that lay at the foot of the cross. Heliotrope is the Sun stone. Freemen were believed to have worn it engraved with a radiant sun, freed slaves wore it with the head of a sun, and slaves’ Heliotropes bore the image of an altar surmounted by a torch. Bloodstone is a stone of courage and wisdom, noble sacrifice and altruistic character. It is also a stone of mysticism, providing insights and the spiritual intuition of truths which transcend ordinary understanding.
